OBITUARY: Robert H. Briem

Robert Harold Brim, age 76 of 2416 Meadowlark Lane, Kelso, died Oct. 6, 1994, in a Longview nursing home.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 22, at the Kelso Elks with Floyd Carpenter officiating. Inurnment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Tacoma (Lakewood).

He was born June 2, 1918, in Seattle to Bjartmar Briem and Marie Briem. He attended grade school in Chehalis and was a 1937 graduate of Kelso High School.

During World War II, he served in the Navy as a boatswain mate.

While in Lakewood, Wash., he operated three drive-in restaurants called Bob’s Burger Barn, and when he moved to Chico, Calif. in 1963 he built and operated two more Bob’s Burger Barns there. He also had been a wine salesman in Seattle and a Realtor for Sun Realty until he retired.

His favorite hobby was building and flying airplanes, and he was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Of his six planes, the Great Lakes was his pride and joy. He also was a Scoutmaster for 10 years and a member of the Elks for 21 years.

His wife of 45 years, Elizabeth Jean Fires Briem, died in February 1987. In June of that year he attended his 50th class reunion and renewed acquaintances with Lucille Mellein Moffitt. They married in Reno, Nev., on Sept. 8, 1987. They lived in Chico, Calif., for six years before returning to Kelso in 1993.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy, at home; a son, Robert Briem Jr., of Old Saybrook, Conn.; a daughter, Marilyn Vallery, of Tacoma; a stepson, John T. McIntyre of Herndon, Va.; two sisters, Lona Marie Briem of Riverside, Calif. and LuAnne Zinzer of Longview; four granddaughters and two great granddaughters.

“Betty” Briem, 71, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1987, in Chico, California.

Briem was born in Portland on January 29, 1916, to Parmele and Minerva Fries.

She married Robert H. Briem, May 30, 1942, in Hoquiam, Washington.

Mr. & Mrs. Briem operated Bob’s Burger Barns in the Tacoma area for several years before moving to Chico in 1963.

In addition her husband, she is survived by her son, Robert, of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, and a daughter, Marilyn Vallery, of Sumner and four grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the Heart Association.
