J. C. Penney store in Aberdeen, South Dakota
J. C. Penney,
head of the nationwide chain of stores, was visiting his Aberdeen, S. D.,
store. Clustered around the entrance to meet him were local dignitaries, store
officials, clerks and newsmen. After an exchange of greetings, Penney happened
to glance past the crowd and spotted a customer standing along at a counter at
the far end of the store. “Who,” asked the master merchandiser, “is waiting on
that lady back there?”
